David Lenz
David Lenz was born in Grand Island, where he grew up and graduated from Grand Island Senior High in 1966. In January 1968, David was drafted into the Army, undergoing basic training at Fort Lewis, Washington, and AIT at Fort Ord, California, before being deployed to Vietnam. He served with the 416th Transportation Company, constructing roads to help move heavy equipment and tanks across difficult terrain.
His service took him to areas such as Vung Tau, Phu Quoc, and Vinh Long. During his time in Vietnam, David had a buddy, Rich Gillham, stationed just eight miles away. Tragically, Rich was killed in action just days before David was scheduled to move to Van Long. David cherished the chance to say goodbye to Rich before he left.
In 1973, David married Linda Nelson, and they had two children, Amy and the late Chris, as well as three grandchildren: Madyson, Regan, and Mason. David worked at Hastings Grain Inspection for 49 years. In his free time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with his loved ones. A memorable moment was participating in the Hero Flight, where he traveled with his daughter and other veterans, and experienced an emotional homecoming celebration.
