SFC David Munoz of Grand Island, Graduate of Northwest High School in 2004 joined the U.S. Army after his parents Steve and Norine signed a wavier for his enlistment at the age of 17. SFC Munoz is a current member of Nebraska National Guard serving as a Range Control Officer.
His roles varied during his over 22 years in the U.S. Army from Gunner, Dismount and Sniper with the 1-167th FWD Cavalry Troop A. This unit was the first combat unit to deploy from Nebraska since WWII and deployed months after he graduated. His next assignment was Section Chief, Parachute Rigger, Jumpmaster, Pathfinder, and Air Assault with an Airborne Parachute Rigging Detachment. SFC Munoz deployed for Operations Enduring/Iraqi Freedom into a combat zone in the Al Anbar Providence at Camp Ramadi early in the war.
Munoz served with distinction helping his unit earn the Meritorious Unit Commendation along with many other accolades. SFC Munoz was awarded a commendation for valor for dismantling an IED with his combat knife without hesitation and no consideration for his own safety while under direct fire from the enemy saving his fellow squad, he also earned commendations from the USMC while attached to Marine Corps EOD.
