John Henry Baasch was born in Grand Island, Nebraska. He served four years in the U.S. Navy on a destroyer tender, working as a welder and hot Shellman.
Following his service, he attended Doane University, then founded John Baasch Welding and Engineering. He did welding repair jobs, taught welding classes and many memorable projects: Built from scratch steam engine, lead recovery machine, fertilizer converter and hydraulic veterinary table for cattle.
