Corporal Robert “Bob” Holmes was born December 28, 1945, in Grand Island. He was active duty from September 17, 1964, to September 16, 1968, and inactive duty 2 years before being honorably discharged August 6, 1970. Robert had boot camp in San Diego, California, and was stationed at Camp Pendleton, California, and Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. He served in Chu Lia, Vietnam in 1965-1966, then was at Marine Corp Air Base in Yuma, Arizona, and Headquarters Battalion in Arlington, Virginia, where he met his wife, Bonnie, and married November 1968. During his service, Robert earned a Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Navy Unit Citation, Vietnam Service Medal with two stars, and a Vietnam Campaign Medal with device.
Robert did computer coding and moved back to Grand Island in 1969. He worked for the City of Grand Island as an accountant, business manager, data processing manager for 45 years before retiring. Robert enjoys gardening/yard work, fishing, doing Boy Scouts with his son, and watching Husker football. Robert and Bonnie have two children, Richard (Deborah) Holmes, and Kristine (Russell) Lee; five grandchildren, Ashley Lee (and fiancée), Russell Garey, Alexandria Holmes, Ryley Lee, Richard Holmes, Jr.; and one great grandson, Timothy Tiffany.
