Corporal Richard Holmes was born April 20, 1969, in Washington, D.C. and moved to Grand Island when he was 6 months old. He signed up for the Marines in February 1987 and graduated high school in May. He went to boot camp in San Diego, California, in November 1987, and then went to Camp Geiger, North Carolina, for mechanic training. He was stationed in 29 Palms, California, for 2½ years and Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, for 1½ years. During Desert Storm, he was deployed to various undisclosed locations. Rich was discharged on November 11, 1993, as a corporal and came back to Grand Island. He was an inactive reservist until February 16, 1995, and was honorably discharged.
While in the Marines, he earned a Rifle Marksman Badge, a Meritorious Unit Commendation, a National Defense Service Medal, a Good Conduct Medal, two Meritorious Masts, and had two Letters of Appreciation,
After coming back to Grand Island, he met his wife, Deb. They were married in April 1995. He has two children, Alexandria and Richard Jr. He worked for GIA for 12 years until their closing and has worked 18 years at MFS/York/Stormor (AGI). Rich enjoys playing video games and watching NASCAR.
