Melvin (Moe) F. Atkins was born August 9, 1926 in Stratton, CO to Ezra & Josephine Atkins. 9 of their 12 children would serve in the US Military. Moe married JoAnn Evans prior to his enlistment in the US Navy in October 1944. His initial training was done at Naval Training Center in Farragut, Idaho. Seaman 2nd Class Atkins would serve on the USS California & the USS Quincy in the Asiatic Pacific. He was Honorably Discharged in April 1946. The couple would have 2 sons, Thomas & Jerry. After the US Navy, Moe’s life was spent building roads in Nebraska including Interstate 80. He was patriotic, a road builder, a master mechanic & was an avid fisherman. Moe would teach their sons how to build roads & pass on to them patriotism, both having served in the US Army. The jury is still out on their claim as fishermen. Moe was loved by the majority who knew him. Upon his health decline, the couple moved to Grand Island from Johnson Lake to be near their family, before his death in 2003. We, his family know he is busting his buttons to see his heritage continue, 13 Grandchildren & 21 Great Grandchildren.
