Karl entered the service in 1949 and enlisted in Company B of the Nebraska National Guard. He was sent on a two-week summer training at Ft Leonard, MO in June 1950. After returning from Camp he was immediately discharged from the Guard as he fraudulently enlisted under the age of 16.
In August of 1956, Karl was drafted and was inducted into the Army at Fort Crook, NE and was appointed the leader of his group. Karl spent six weeks of basic training to be a typist and a chaplain's assistant.
On January 1, 1956, Karl arrived in Ujonbu Korea and was assigned to I Corps surgery office. He was transferred to the 121st Medical Department which was part of the 8th Army headquarters in Japan. He learned how to be an x-ray technician and a pharmaceutical technician. The mission was to provide medical care to I Corps headquarters and to a MP Company and provide aid as needed to a Turkish Regiment.
After 18 months Karl disembarked at Oakland, CA. He was assigned to a hospital group in Omaha, NE in the Army Reserves. Karl spent two weeks at Ft Carson, CO and was then officially discharged.
