While working a temporary job after business school Patricia lunched with the recruiters, they convinced her to join the service. She had to get her parents’ permission to join.
Patricia went to boot camp in Orlando, Florida and was then stationed at the Naval Station in Annapolis, Maryland. Located across from Chesapeake Bay. In the beginning, she worked on upkeep of Luders yawls (sailboats) used by the midshipmen. Scraping barnacles from the bottom of the boats when they were pulled out for maintenance. She knew she didn't want to do that, so she completed correspondence courses for Yeoman. For a period of time, she was working with sewing sails for the sail boats.
Patricia earned the rank of E4 Yeoman in May 1975. She then transferred to the Yard Patrol department, the boats were mini ships that the midshipmen used, taking them down to Norfolk, Virginia for a week at a time. She was responsible for the ordering of supplies for the boats and clerical duties.
She was in the Navy from April 1973-April 1976. Patricia said" The time I spent in the service was a wonderful and learning experience. I appreciated each and every day. I'm proud to say I'm a veteran."
