After High School graduation in 1967, he enlisted in the United States Army on 17 July 1967. Basic Training was at Ft. Benning, Georgia. AIT was at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri where Robert trained as a crane operator.
On 11 December 1967, he landed in Bien Hoa, Vietnam. From there he flew north to Pleiku, Vietnam, to the 62nd Maintenance Battalion, 510th Engineer Co. and assigned to a twenty-ton truck mounted crane. After a year, Robert extended his tour and was able to come home for Christmas in 1968.
Robert went back to Vietnam for the additional six months and returned to the States 18 July 1969.
After my leave, he was stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri where he was an Assistant Crane Operator Instructor. In November 1969, Robert transferred to Co. A, 97th Engineer Battalion at Ft. Riley, Kansas to operate a crane in the quarry until his discharge on 16 July 1970.
