Robert Whaley born on August 26th 1940. He was one of 8 sons born to Guy and Laura Whaley. All 8 of the brothers served in the Navy. He joined the United States Navy May 18th 1962. Went to San Diego for basic training, after basic training he was sent to Newport, Rhode Island where he was assigned to the destroyed USS Abbot. Newport was their home port while they sailed between Halifax, Nova Scotia and San Juan, Puerto Rico. They were a training vessel along with the USS Sullivan. While on the ship he oversaw evaporators where he made fresh water from sea water.
The abbot was involved in the Cuban missile crisis in fall of 1962. It was the abbot that fired the warning shot over a Russian Trawler that was trying to enter Cuba. The Abbot was put in dry dock in Philadelphia in the summer of 1964. Robert left active-duty April 1, 1964.
He worked for Union Pacific railroad after the service. Robert and his wife, Peggy had 3 daughters.
